The bus allows you do ride 6+ hours on single track and skip the 4 hour road ride back to the start... Pretty civilized if you ask me! It also made getting to different destinations very simple and we didn't need to rent a car which is a HUGE bonus.

I have the evo lite 661 pads and they're great for xc riding on technical trails when the consequences aren't too high for that extra panacea. I wouldn't trust them on rough terrain or for high speed crashes. With mine I like the fact that you can take them off and on without having to pull them over your shoes. If I have to pull them over my shoes, or take my shoes off I'd rather have more beefy protection, which I why I bought the POC knee pads.

condolences to his friends and family. The mountain bike and ski community lost last thursday.

iamamodel - awesome thanks. I had a feeling it should feel like edging on skis but I'll try that!

I've been trying to learn how to cuttie, I can sort of do it clipped in, but unless I can do it on flats i'm doing something wrong. While clips do help you to stay on the pedals, proper technique should be more important... just look at trials riders and what they can do on flats!

I bought a pair of the POC knees to replace my Kyle Straights. I use them in the Whistler Bike Park, Shuttle rides and trails where the consequences are high if I crash. I can pedal ok in them, but there is one stitch that is always digging into the back and side of my knee- you know where that ligament kinda bulges out. They are very warm. The 661 evo wouldn't be very good in a high impact crash IMO.

Great article. Agree with the Shimano Trail pedals. I feel a lot more comfortable on these then the old pedals with the larger use able platform and ease of getting in and out. As for the flats vs clipped in debate. It is a matter of preference and comfort. I switch between the two depending on the bike and trail I'm riding. I prefer flats on more technical trails since its easier to bail. Clipped in is far more committed... but in a race its probably an advantage. I'm clipped in all the way on more XC/AM rides where there is more climbing and the descents aren't as hairy. Nice plug for Kona! I've heard lots of good things about them for 2011. So long as you don't talk about the magic link...

XC is the new AM! Everyone I've talked to who has compared a 29'r to a 26'r agree they are faster on all but the most technical, tight trails.

Fair enough, 1X10 sure is simple. No front deraileur is not a bad thing! I've tried 2X10 a bit and I am surprised at how much I can climb in the 26X36. Mike is right, you are stronger then you think... and it is more efficient. But I don't think I'm strong enough for only one ring in the front, what is it usually anyway?
